The recently wrapped creature feature HUNTER’S MOON (which we first reported on here, and which we’re giving you an exclusive first look at above) is double-dipping in the genre pool. It’s both a psychological horror film and an old-school monster movie rolled into one. “There’s a quality to the monster and a quality to the story,” says writer/director Mark Stouffer of his California-filmed 22-day wonder. “I think the audience will buy it.”
HUNTER’S MOON tells the story of a young man (Devon Sawa of FINAL DESTINATION and IDLE HANDS) who is having recurring nightmares in which he and his friends are slaughtered by an otherworldly creature called The Catcher. In an attempt to cure him of his bad dreams, his friends take him to a secluded forest—where the visions indicate The Catcher is—to prove that the creature only exists in his dreams. Well, guess what? The Catcher is real, and the slaughter becomes a bloody reality. The cast of the $2.5-million feature also includes Latin singing star Fernanda Romero, Dan White, Sanoe (BLUE CRUSH) Lake, Matthew (BOLTNECK) Lawrence and Siena Goines. On the all-important creature side, Jordu (ALIEN RESURRECTION) Schell was responsible for the Catcher design, Jon (UNDERWORLD) Dawe and George (ALIEN VS. PREDATOR) Bernota handled the animatronics and Lance (GHOSTS OF MARS) Wilhoite is coordinating the visual FX.
Sawa also acknowledges the cross-matching of subgenres in HUNTER’S MOON. “This is not so much horror as it is a psychological thriller with some sci-fi elements,” he states. “We’re not doing a Rob Zombie thing where we’re killing people right and left. But at the end of the day, this is a creature feature and it is going to scare people. If I didn’t think this was going to be good, I wouldn’t have done it. We’re doing something a little bit different, a little bit cooler.” Look for a full set-visit report on HUNTER’S MOON in Fango’s pages next year. |
